The food you eat versus the thoughts you eat – how’s your digestion?

Well hello again and welcome to Friday’s blog,

Today I want to discuss something with you, that I have become quite intrigued with for the past 6 months or so, as I have negotiated some health challenges in my life. And that is the question of food versus thought.

These are both things that enter our bodies in some fashion: food for the body and thoughts for the mind you could say. And once they have arrived at their various destinations – the primary destination being You – they mill about inside for quite some time prior to making an exit.

Food takes a seat in your body and thoughts take a seat at the buffet that is your mind.

So the question is: is what you are putting into your body and mind toxic or is it easily digestible?

And why is it that we tend to give so little consideration to the thoughts we thrust upon our unsuspecting minds, whilst we often give great consideration to what we put into our mouths?

Food for thought you could say ha ha!!

It seems that most of us give at least some time each day to thinking about the food we put into our bodies and the effect it will have on our system. But just how much time each day, do we dedicate to what we are thinking?

To be more specific – just how much time each day do you put into thinking about the thoughts you are putting into your mind?

Mmmmmmm – now that’s a curly question.

If you are like most people, you probably give your thoughts little attention at all – and yet, many people [ both in the medical profession and those in the world of wholistic health and other health focused genres ] will now tell you that there is a significant link between the thoughts we entertain and our physical health and well being.

If you believe the research – the two are inextricably linked. And yet – we still tend to ignore the connection and struggle on wondering why our health suffers.

The reason I find this curious is that I have observed from my own experience, that my state of mind has just as much impact upon my physical health as does my food intake……if not more to be honest. When I am calm and feeling relaxed and positive about life – my body responds accordingly…..despite what I am eating or drinking it appears. But then, I can be eating really well – staying away from alcohol, caffeine, chocolate etc etc and stacking up on all the vegetables in the world and my body is not happy at all.

Go figure?

In her amazing book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself – Dr Lissa Rankin M.D. discusses this very phenomena citing many examples from her own patients. People who were doing all the right things in terms of their eating habits, but not doing anything at all to counter the undigestible thoughts and emotions that were within their minds.

And this is the discovery I seem to have made through my own trial and error. And it makes perfect sense.

If you are carrying around a heap of undigested thoughts, feelings and emotions, these will be continually triggering in your physical body a variety of defensive responses. And whilst your body is busy defending against all this negativity, your energetic resources become depleted and suddenly you find you are ill.

You can eat all the healthy food you want – but whilst those negative energetic patterns keep flowing about your body in a bullet proof cavalcade, courtesy of your mind and your unchecked thoughts – you have no chance.

Undigested thoughts are just as bad as undigested food it would appear – toxic.

They drain you of your life force. They drain your health and energy levels. They are bad news.

But the good news is – you can keep them under control and learn to turn them around.

You can make these thoughts your friend.

All you need to do is learn to monitor the thoughts going into your mind, much the same way that you would monitor the food going into your body.

And this is where positive affirmations can help you.

Now if you have never done an affirmation before – do not be worried. It is easy. It is simply taking a positive thought and affirming it, by repeating it. Hence the name – affirmation ha ha.

Not so scary, weird or spooky after all.

For instance – you may notice that you are thinking: ” I always fall over when I try to ski”

Now you simply change that to: ” I am getting better and better at my skiing all the time – bravo”

[ now repeat it over and over at least 10 times or until you believe it to be the case ]

Or you may say: ” Life is so unfair and I am never going to have any money”

Change that to: ” Wow – life is amazing and I am always surrounded by so many opportunities to increase my wealth.

[ now repeat it over and over at least 10 times or until you believe it to be the case ]

Or maybe you are thinking: ” I hate winter – its so cold”

You could think instead: ” Gee – its freezing – time to get out my favourite woolly socks out and that fabulous scarf my grandmother knitted me. I love winter “

[ now repeat it over and over at least 10 times or until you believe it to be the case ]

These may seem like little things – things that could not possibly matter.

But if you multiply out, on any given day the thousands, if not millions of thoughts that go through your mind. And then sift through to see how many of them are positive and full of hope? And then sift through to see how many are negative, grumbling and full of fear or anger or sadness? You may be surprised at just how much ‘not so encouraging stuff’ you find.

It would be like eating nothing but chocolate, ice cream and McDonalds for a month. With not a vegetable, a piece of fruit or a glass of water in sight!

Most of us would not even consider such a thing, but yet we are willing to bombard our minds with these undigestible thoughts on a regular and relentless basis and expect it all to be OK.

Well – let me tell you.

I think perhaps it is not. But it is for you to decide.

So today, if you are wanting to improve your general health and well being, and this notion sounds plausible to you, you may like to make a commitment to yourself to start taking notice of the thoughts that you feed you mind each and every day.

Spoonful by spoonful, mouthful by mouthful, meal by meal.

Think about what you feed your mind –  just as carefully as you think about what you feed your body. And if these thoughts you are feeding your mind, do not resonate with how you want to see the world, and how you want the world to see you……then make a change.

You have the Power.

You have the Choice.

So feed yourself everyday with stuff that’s good for your mind, your body and your soul.

Together – it might just make a real difference in more ways then you can imagine.
