Living rich or getting rich – just where does your focus reside?

A cheery hello to all and welcome back,

Today I have a very simple question to pose to you.

A life defining question.

An impactful question that can really change your life.

And I ask you to simply let it sit with you for the week and see what you find. See how you honestly respond.

How you react to it?

How you feel ?

What you sense?

Your immediate reaction to the question may indeed tell you a lot

And that question is:

In your life, are you focused on getting rich or on living rich?

Before you do anything, just sit with it, and see how you feel and react.

Write down your immediate feelings and thoughts.

What does your gut say and how does your heart respond?

Even as I type this blog I am pondering the question and its ramifications in my own life to be completely honest, because upon closer inspection, it is a question that could really be quite life defining. And I am feeling a life review coming upon me as I type ha ha. I think I am in for a contemplative afternoon to be honest.

Why?

Because it is a question that really packs a punch.

It is  a question that could really point to the motivating factors in your life.

It is a question that may really bring out some home truths, that may indeed be truly impacting your life.

It is certainly a question worth asking in my opinion and there are certainly many shades of grey in this topic too.

For some people getting rich may indeed be exactly what they see as living rich and those two things may be able to coexist in the most comfy of manners. But to others, the manner in which you are striving to “get rich” may in fact be in direct conflict to “living the rich and textured life” you seek to enjoy.

So I guess the question today, is for you to take under review so to speak and to come to your own conclusion.

Certainly everyone has their own work/ life balance and everyone seeks to enjoy life on their own terms too. So the balance that sits at the core of this entire premise will be undoubtedly different for each and every person reading today’s blog. But the question is a life defining and wonderful one. So simple and yet so complex – as most things of any value in life can tend to be.

So today, I simply invite you to ask yourself that question: In your life, are you focused on getting rich or on living rich?

I guess the first thing  you will need to do, is to define what “living rich” looks like for you. And in order to do that, I suggest you simply grab a pen and paper and write down the first 10 things that jump into your head when you think about living a rich life.

What does “living rich” look like to you?

How does “living rich” feel?

What would you be doing if you were “living rich”?

After you have your list – then have a good look to see if what you have listed measures up with how you are currently living your life?

Next – what would getting rich mean and look like to you? How much money would you need to consider yourself as rich? And how would you be spending your days if you were focused on the accumulation of wealth? Again – simply list 10 things that come to your mind around the following concept:

How would you spend your time in order to “get rich”?

How much money would you need to consider yourself rich?

What does “getting rich” look like to you?

How does “getting rich” feel?

What would you be doing each day if you were focused on “getting rich”?

Once you have these two lists, you will be able to see very clearly that they are two incredibly different things.

Living rich seems to be all about living a meaningful, diverse, joyful, textured existence whilst getting rich seems to be much more single minded in its focus and therefore outcomes.

Take a good look at your living rich list.

Now take a good look at your getting rich list.

Now write some outcomes to go with each thing listed on each list.

For instance you may have listed on your “living rich” page:

1. Lunch with my best friend.

The outcome for this may be – experiencing friendship and discovering myself through this friendship. Laughter, joy, sharing, caring about another person instead of just myself. Giving, loving etc etc

Or you may have listed on your “getting rich” page:

1. Working 14 hour days.

The outcome maybe – feeling fulfilled, a great sense of achievement and self esteem. Reaching new goals. Feeling exhausted and missing family time. Sometimes angry and annoyed with people. But loving all I am achieving.

There are no right or wrong answers here. It is all about discovering what is right for you.

It is all about discovering what makes you tick.

To some people – a life focused on “getting rich” maybe the same as a life spent “living rich”.

But to some people – these two approaches will be world’s apart.

And that is what this one little question can help you define.

Taking the time out to ask the question and reflect upon your answers, is what truly matters here.

As the famous quote says: ” The quality of your life is defined by the questions you ask”.

So today – I simply invite you to ask yourself this question and then follow your heart and intuition to where it leads you in uncovering the answer.

It is a life defining question that could, by the very act of asking it, very much impact upon the quality and experience of your life.

So my advice today is to simply:

Ask the question.

Seek the answer.

And move to a greater understanding and acceptance of you.
