Tribal Consciousness – to which tribe do you belong and how is that impacting your life?

Hello to all and welcome back to the blog,

Of recent times I have heard the word ” tribe” bandied around a lot and it has got me thinking about what ” tribe ” I belong to?

And / or what ” tribe ” I may want to belong to?

Having attended a recent workshop with the amazing Carolyn Myss, she spoke a lot about the effects of tribal consciousness upon our health and well being, so today I invite you to simply examine these three questions:

  1. What tribe do you belong to?
  2. What tribe do you wish you belonged to?
  3. How do you think aligning yourself with these particular tribes effects your health and well being and how you exist in the world?

So – first of all you may be thinking  - ” what do you mean by TRIBE?

Well – I guess a tribe is a group to whom you feel you belong.

A group whose approval you seek.

A group whose ideas and attitudes you endorse in some way.

A group with whom you resonate in some way.

These groups may have very loose requirements for you to belong – or they may have a very strict code of conduct/behaviours and ideas. This will be for you to sort through.

Family would be the most easily identifiable “tribe” to which most of us belong.

Then there could be a strong religious affiliation or tribe.

Or a strong political leaning or tribe.

Or maybe even a cultural group or tribe you feel you connect with – soccer players / dance teachers who believe this or that / the P & C who stand for this etc etc etc

The question I guess for today is this:

  1. What does your affiliation with your various tribes mean to you and do they enhance your life or restrict your life?

Again – only you can know what affiliations you have and how strongly you are impacted upon by them or influenced by their reach. So today I simply encourage you to have a look at all your tribal affiliations and how healthy they are for you in three ways:

  • Mind
  • Body
  • Spirit

It is as simple as that.

Sometimes I feel we can aspire to be a certain ” thing / person” that we see in the media – something or some way of life that is held up as being the ultimate accomplishment.

But quite simply put – if what you have to do –  and how you have to behave –  and what you have to endorse and believe to join this tribe, does not really align with your own true beliefs and sense of self – then  you will be in for a bumpy ride.

A quick trip to sabotage your own well being in one of the three categories above: mind, body or spirit.

We all like to feel that we belong.

We all like to feel that we are valued.

We all like to feel that we matter to someone or something.

But the simple truth is, that belonging to a tribe that does not truly honour your deep sense of self and your deep seated values is a worthless and unforgiving act.

Destined for sorrow.

Destined for struggle.

Destined for conflict.

For no amount of belonging can ever satiate your need to be You.

And compromising who you are to satisfy the needs of the tribe, will only end in tears.

So choose the tribes to which you belong wisely.

Affiliate yourself only with those tribes that allow you to express who you truly are.

Navigate your own path and even if it takes longer to get where you are going – trust that following your own instinct and gut is the right path for You.

Because being part of a tribe that stifles your creativity and individuality, sentencing you to a life of “sheeple” like behaviours that do not align with your true self and values, is not a healthy place to be. Of course, compromise can always be good. But turning your back on what you truly believe and feel to satisfy the needs of the tribe, is not a healthy choice.

It’s like the old saying: “There is nothing that is more of a waste of time, as doing something that didn’t need to be done”

Similarly: ” There is no greater waste of time than being a member of a tribe, that does not truly represent your values” – and taking on the negative feeling and actions and emotions of a large tribal group, with which you align, can certainly be playing havoc with your health and well being.

So be careful where you align your time.

Be careful as to what ideas and images you constantly take on and welcome into your life.

Join the tribes that truly reflect the life you wish to have.

Join the tribes that  pulse with the energy you wish to give out and draw in towards you.

Join the tribes that represent where you wish to be.

If you want a loving and joyous life – join tribes that sparkle with this energy.

If you want to be productive and giving – join tribes of people that are productive and giving.

If you want to celebrate life and feel thankful for all you have – join groups that represent that ideology and aspiration.

The tribal consciousness you join will surely impact you on many levels.
